The aura of The polytechnic, Ibadan yesterday, Thursday 17th August, 2018 was rendered tense after the long-awaited SUG cup match between the students of mechanical engineering (Southerners) and accountancy students (Northerners) of the institution turned a field for bloodshed. In preparation against the SUG week coming through in few days’ time, the match was staged to welcome the incoming week which the student populace has been anticipating for a short while.
The football match, which took place on the South football field of the institution yesterday witnessed a considerate number of turnout. Students converged there after their classes while those that were free for the day had converged earlier to witness the match between the Southerners and northerners from the start to the end. It was a match to witness with promising excitement and so ladies were not left out in the amusement as they journeyed in two’s to the football pitch to feed their eyes and rail off the stress of the day. The male students were eager to go. It was such a big clash – a clash between the South and the North!
The match started with supporters from both sides giving accolades and shouts of joy, hailing the giants on the pitch. The southerners were striking hard. They shot from all sides of the football field in all directions while the southerners were also pressing hard. It was a match to behold really. Towards the end of the match, which was in favour of the Mechanical engineering students, the crowd went agog when a student brought out a gun and let a bullet into the air. The gunshot, which went into the air, accidentally hit a female student who had come to watch the football match. Reports also have it that a partial judgement from the referee, which was in favour of the Northerners, led to the shootout. The students did not wait for another sound that they took to their heels.
An ND 2 student of the institution, who pleaded anonymity, told our correspondent that the state of security of the institution is very poor.
In fear of what happens next, students of the accountancy department have however vowed not to dress in their usual white and ashes color uniform to school next week.
It is however displeasing to the ears that despite the tense atmosphere, lectures held in the school today. The school management is yet to wheel out any information or instruction about the brutal incident as at the time of compilation of this report.
